Overview
Knowte (“the app,” “we,” “our”) is a local-first note-taking utility for Windows, developed and operated by Priyansh, an individual developer based in India. This policy explains what data the app handles and, just as importantly, what it doesn’t. It also covers this website, knowte.co.in, including the waitlist you can join before the app is available to everyone.
The short version
Knowte does not collect, transmit, or sell any of your data. There’s no account, no cloud sync, and no analytics or tracking of any kind built into the app. Your notes, clipboard items, and attachments stay on your computer, in a folder you can open in File Explorer at any time.
1. What the App Stores, and Where
| Data | Where it lives | Leaves your device? |
|---|---|---|
| Your notes (title, content, tags, timestamps) | Plain .md files in a FloatingNotes folder inside your Documents folder (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\FloatingNotes\) | No |
| Clipboard items you save (snippets, API keys, commands) | Same local notes storage, alongside your other notes | No |
| File attachments | Copied into your local FloatingNotes folder, alongside the note that references them | No |
| App preferences (theme, translucency, note retention period) | Local app preferences storage on your device — removed automatically when you uninstall the app | No |
Scheduled reminders (from remind notes) | Local Windows notification scheduler | No |
Knowte never uploads notes, clipboard items, attachments, or preferences to any server, because it doesn’t have one — there is no Knowte backend. Everything the app does happens on your machine.
A note on security
Your notes, clipboard items, and any attached files are stored as plain, unencrypted files. Anyone with access to your Windows user account or file system — including other software running on your machine — could read them. Knowte doesn’t encrypt this data at rest. If you store sensitive material like API keys or credentials, rely on your device’s own protections (a strong Windows login, BitLocker or another full-disk encryption) rather than assuming the app secures it for you.
2. Note Retention
By default, notes untouched for 30 days are automatically deleted the next time the app loads, to keep the app lightweight and clutter-free. You can change this retention period, or turn it off entirely (“Never”), in Settings. Because this deletion is local and permanent, we recommend moving anything you want to keep long-term out of the auto-prune window or setting retention to “Never.”
3. Network Access
Knowte makes no automatic or background network requests, and includes no analytics, telemetry, crash-reporting, auto-update checks, or advertising SDKs. The app works fully offline.
The only time the app touches the network is when you explicitly ask it to, via the web note mode: typing a query and pressing Enter opens that query (or URL) in your default external browser — the request goes from your browser, not from within Knowte, and Knowte does not see or log the results.
4. Notifications
The remind note mode schedules local notifications through your operating system. These are purely local (no push notification service, no server involved) and are only used to remind you about your own notes.
5. Data You Delete
Deleting a note removes its file from your FloatingNotes folder. Since there’s no cloud copy anywhere, deletion is final — there’s no remote backup for us to also clear, because we never had one.
6. Uninstalling the App
Uninstalling Knowte removes its preferences (theme, retention settings, and similar). It does not touch the FloatingNotes folder in your Documents — your notes, clipboard items, and attachments stay right where they are unless you delete that folder yourself.
7. This Website & the Waitlist
This policy also covers knowte.co.in, including the waitlist you can join before the app ships.
- If you submit your email to join the waitlist, it's stored in a Supabase database and used to send you a confirmation email (via Resend) and to let you know when the app is ready.
- The website uses Vercel Analytics to understand traffic. It's script-based and doesn't use cookies or collect anything that identifies you personally — just aggregated page views, approximate location, device/browser type, and referring site.
- We don't sell this data, and we don't use your email to send marketing unrelated to Knowte.
You can ask to be removed from the waitlist at any time — email hello@knowte.co.in or reply “remove” to any email from us.
8. Children's Privacy
The app does not knowingly collect information from children, because it does not collect information at all. The website’s waitlist isn’t directed at children either — we don’t knowingly collect an email address from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
9. Changes to This Policy
If Knowte’s data practices ever change — for example, if a future version adds optional cloud sync — this document will be updated and the “Last updated” date above will reflect that. We won’t start collecting or transmitting data silently.
10. Governing Law
This policy is governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
11. Contact
Knowte is developed and operated by Priyansh. Questions about the app or this policy can be sent to feedback@knowte.app. For waitlist-specific questions, including removal requests, email hello@knowte.co.in. See also our Terms & Conditions.
